Street Fighter Online: Mouse Generation

Back in the late 80s, early 90s, a most brutal war took place between two blood thirsty factions--those for "Street Fighter II" and those for "Mortal Kombat". Although "Street Fighter" the movie definitely lost to "Mortal Kombat 1," what many thought to be a never-ending battle comes to a definitive close for you Liu Kang lovers in 2008! Because it's "Street Fighter" that's coming to a PC and mouse near you (well near you in the Far East) according to Game Watch.

Yes, it's the same fighting backwards quarter circle + A type play (only with your mouse?) but now it's customizable:

And that's not only the character look but the character skills and special attacks as well (as shown by the evil kitten Chun Li):

Here be the official website:

http://streetfighteronline.jp/

You'll be pleased to know that there's even moah random Chinese fighting girls. And hey, the beta test is going on over thar until February 4th, 5:00 PM, so grab a fake IP and enter! But make sure you have better than a NVIDIA series 6 card.... (Snicker.) Oh, and check the Game Watch article for more piccies.

Best Selling Games of 2007

According to the BBC anyhoo:

2007's best selling game revealed
Call of Duty 4
Call of Duty 4 has won many awards since its launch
First-person-shooter Call of Duty 4 was last year's biggest selling game, according to sales figures.

It has sold more than seven million units since its launch in November, says its publisher Activision.

The claim is based on sales figures from research firms The NPD Group, Chart Track and The GFK Group.

The game was just one of a raft of high profile releases in 2007 including the third instalment of the Halo series for the Xbox 360.

Halo 3 earned more than £84m ($170m) in sales in its first 24 hours on release, according to Microsoft.

The game sets the record for the most money earned in a day by an entertainment product, topping figures set by film Spiderman 3.

'Perfect 10'

However, Microsoft recently announced that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had overtaken Halo 3 for the first time as the most popular game on Xbox Live, based on unique users.

And despite being released six weeks after Halo 3 it has also sold more units.

"We're very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year," said Will Kassoy, of the game's publisher Activision.

Call of Duty 4 was developed by Infinity Ward and is available for PC, PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

It follows the story of a American and British Special Forces in Russia and the Middle East and won "Best Action game" at the video game industry's leading event, E3.

It also won the Spike TV awards for "Best Shooter" and "Best Military Game".

However, the title narrowly missed a perfect 10 out of 10 score in computer game's magazine Edge.

Halo 3, The Orange Box and Super Mario Galaxy all achieved a perfect score.

Maybe now they will make more official maps for it? I don't want to play any more custom maps where accidentally brushing against fauna results in a kill trigger. *snurf!*

Left 4 Dead: When Zombies Attack

A few of us who enjoy blasting zombies away have been discussing this of late and when (if) "Left 4 Dead" from Turtle Rock Studios decides to come out, it might be worth checking in on. After all, how dead sexy is it to have a group of brain thirsty zombies mauling you?

Dat's right! Zombie apocalypse is in your face!

Anyhoo, here's a link to the official site:

http://www.l4d.com/

And here's a G4 moving pictures exclusive about it:

For those of you who can't get through lots of words uttered by two males, "Left 4 Dead" is basically a 4 person multi-player co-op game set in the present day versus EVIL zombies! Looks like it will be for the PC and the PS3, and according to the FAQs, we're looking for an Autumn 2008 release.

Zombie chop!

Gundam 00: Halo's Back!

I'm watching this right now on Veoh (just type in: "Gundam 00" in the search box for the different versions.) And yes, I got sucked in because the mechs in the first episode looked a lot like MechWarriors (all clunky and shit), but alas, IT WAS TRAP!! (My tongue wasn't able to repel flavour of that magnitude!!) Yes, I got tricked and a real Gundam came out and I was so very very sad, for you see, although its set before Amuro and Char's time, the Gundam looks 50 gabillion times better than the Gundam 78 ever did. (I'm sure Amuro would whine about that too.)

Still, I'm curious to see how Gundam "begins" despite there being some Lynn Minmay and Kaifun wannabes hanging about.

It is the year A.D. 2307. Fossil fuels on Earth have been depleted entirely, with mankind turning to the next available power source: solar energy. During this time, 3 orbital elevators with solar power generation systems are built, each under control by the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (formerly United States of America), the Human Reform League (Russia, China and India) and the Advanced European Union. However, not all countries are able to enjoy the benefits of this system, leading to widespread resentment and war. Arising out of the conflict, a mysterious military organization known as Celestial Being appears, dedicated to end all warfare using Mobile Suits called Gundam. This begins the stories of Gundam Meisters (pilots) Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism and Tiera Erde as they are thrown into conflict between the 3 superpowers and the various other factions.

Hellgate London: Mail Call! Stone Henge Calls!

Wow, I hadn't heard anything about this update in a while but then I checked my mail this morning and...:

Multiplayer: The Stonehenge Chronicles - JANUARY 21, 2008

North America and Europe Only

The Stonehenge Chronicles
Update Notes

Happy New Year!

2008 is upon us, and we’re thrilled to be kicking it off with our first major update – the Stonehenge Chronicles. We’ve got a lot in store for all of our players, so let’s get to it!

In this update, you’ll see the first of the big balance sweeps we’re doing on all of the character classes. Both the Guardian and the Evoker got a lot of attention this time around, and we hope that players of those classes will dig into how the classes play now. We’re making it simple for these players to get a handle on the new balances by allowing them to completely respec their characters.

PvP is starting to get more attention with the introduction of the Dueling Arena. This both makes dueling easier to accomplish and also gives us a better and more accurate way to track play habits and stats – a key to really increasing this section of the game.

There’s also a whole slew of other overall improvements, tweaks, and additions, so take a couple of minutes to go through the release notes and see what’s new.

For our Subscription Members, we’re opening the portal to Stonehenge! This is a completely new area that not only has new items and monsters, but also completely new ways to experience the game.

The Essence Caves are the first of our non-linear style of play. You can repeat this long quest chain multiple times throughout the career of your character as it scales with your character (or party) level. The rewards are rich and many of them are unique to the Stonehenge area.

The Wild is also a new type of game play since it is focused exclusively on group play. You need big groups to have success out there – and the deeper you get, the harder it gets. It’s time to get your friends together!

We’ve got lots more in store, and we’re working on every aspect of the game. Thank you all for your support over the past couple of months. We’re listening and doing all we can to make Hellgate: London what we all want.

See you online!

General
Based on the number and depth of balance changes to skills in this update, certain characters will be provided a “respec token” that allows them to reassign their skill points. This token is automatically placed in the character’s inventory and can be used at any time.

All Evokers and Guardians will receive respec tokens, as will all characters in Subscription Member accounts.

PvP
A Dueling Arena has been built for those who wish to test their mettle against each other. When challenging another character to a duel, the invitation dialogue indicates that the duel will take place in the Arena. When the duel is accepted, both characters are instantly transported there.

When both characters have loaded into the Arena, a countdown begins. During the countdown, characters can move, but they cannot use skills, activate items, cast spells, or attack their opponent. After a duel has been won, the defeated character is reset, as is their opponent and a new countdown clock begins. Players can leave the Dueling Arena by activating their Recall device.

Players can still duel in other areas by joining the same party and activating their /pvp flag as before.

Group Play

  • Increased experience and treasure bonus for groups. Characters now receive more experience and treasure on a greatly accelerated scale based on number of players in a group.

  • Fixed a bug where grouped players that were separated from the rest of their party were receiving extra experience for all of the other group members.

Graphics

  • Templar melee animations have been tweaked for smoother combat flow.

Memory Manager

  • Party members will now show up in higher resolutions. Players will not see the change until they move to a different zone and users must have Textures at least set to High.

User Interface

  • The Mini Map is now set to the top right of the screen with character state icons appearing below.

  • The Chat Window is now scalable. To adjust the size of the chat window, hold down the ALT key. There is a small tab in the upper right hand corner of the chat interface that can be used to resize the window.

  • The LFG interface has received new functionality. To activate the LFG Interface, simply press the ‘P’ key.
    • The screen has been re-arranged to allow for more information and additional features.
    • Party Leaders can advertise existing groups to add new members.
    • Individuals can advertise themselves as being available for a group. To instead create an entirely new group, select the CREATE PARTY option. Otherwise, the character is listed as an individual looking for a group to join.
    • New search filters have been added to better find the right group dynamic.
    • Players can now Invite, Join and Whisper to individuals or groups listed in the LFG interface.

Skills

There are a wide variety of balance tweaks across the Templar and Cabalist factions.

Cabalist:

  • Brom's Curse
    • This spell now heals a fixed amount based on the attacker's level instead of being based on a percentage of the attacker's health.

Items

  • Unique items that were found before Patch 0.5 that are missing special attributes may now be rerolled for free. The process is as follows:
    • All mods must first be removed using a Delux De-Modificator. This is available once at no cost for qualifying items.
    • Once all the mods are removed, insert the item into an Augmentrex 3000. Now click any of the three "Add Property" buttons to reroll the item attributes.
    • All item attributes will be rerolled and the item balance will be up-to-date. If the item level was previously upgraded with the Nano Forge, the additional item levels will be added to the newly generated base level after the item reroll. This means that the new item level may not be the same.

  • The Stun Defense granted by the Gyro Stabilizer has been increased.

  • Health and Power injectors now show up in high level stations.

  • Fire Extinguishers now give the appropriate Ignite Defense.

Monsters

  • A new, rare salvaged material crafting material called Nanoshards are now required to upgrade items.
    • Nanoshards can be obtained from any item, but the chance to salvage one is increased when disassembling rarer items.
    • The number of Nanoshards required to upgrade an item increases each time the same item is upgraded.

Fixes

  • The mini-game now has a timer. This is partly a fix for characters at level 50 who have finished all the quests and get the quest icon and therefore cannot finish it.

  • Fixed a bug where characters would not save when they killed 65,534 monsters in one session.

  • Grappler no longer changes a character’s position in PvP.

  • Fixed a rare bug where equipping the Cleanser and a shield can delete the shield.

  • Fixed a rare bug where Templar could equip both the Cleanser and a shield.

Special Subscriber Features
Stonehenge is a new, non-linear adventuring area that can be accessed through a special portal in Templar Base. The quests and areas around Stonehenge scale in difficulty to challenge characters of any level. This is to allow players to return to this section of the world numerous times and complete the longer associated quests, missions, and raid areas.

Stonehenge itself is a new hub that holds a larger number of players than most Underground Stations. There are new NPCs, new quests, and most importantly, new adventuring areas that are unlike anything within the confines of London.

Quests
A new series of non-linear quests introduce the area surrounding the great druidic monument of Stonehenge.

The Caste Caves
These mystic caves can be found in the wilderness areas outside of Stonehenge. Each caste of demon - Beast, Necro, Spectral, and Primus – has a powerful overlord that resides in these caves. The caves themselves are sealed by the essential aspect of their master’s caste. These caves cannot be entered until the essence of five (5) Champions of the matching demonic caste has been collected. Essence can be collected from any Champion, so adventuring above and below the streets of London may gain you the keys to unlocking these special areas.

Once a character has gathered the required essence of a single Caste, they can either solo or lead a party into the caves and battle against the resident overlord. Not only are there great and special riches to be won, but the head of the caste overlord is also claimed. Once a character has collected the heads of the Beast, Necro, Spectral, and Primus overlords, the adventure continues.

Moloch’s Lair
A great and powerful Demon known as Moloch resides in the rough countryside surrounding Stonehenge, and only the worthy may enter his domain. Characters that have collected the heads of the Beast, Necro, Spectral, and Primus overlords can then make their way deep into the realms of Moloch, the Pit Baron.

Moloch has very unique items that can only be won by defeating him in combat, so the journey to his defeat can be well worth the effort. His soul is eternal, however, so the process of opening his sanctum and destroying his corporeal form is a never-ending challenge.

The Wild
The other main area that lies outside of Stonehenge is known only as The Wild. The challenges here are far greater than anywhere else in or around London, requiring raiding parties to properly navigate them.

The Wild is divided into three increasingly difficult sections that are balanced for parties of six, seven, and eight. This is regardless of the number of characters that enter The Wild, so while you could try to make your way slowly with a smaller group, the going will not be easy.

Items

There are new weapons and armor that can only be found in the areas surrounding Stonehenge. These new items have very different appearances from those found within London, so keep a sharp lookout for them.

  • 13 new base weapon types divided amongst the Templar, Cabalist, and Hunters.

  • Each faction also has two all-new Helmet types.

Environments

Apart from the settlement that has secreted itself at the Stonehenge triliths, there are numerous new areas to explore. Chief amongst these are the various Caste Caves and grand expanses and dark forests of The Wild. There are also new undergrounds and interiors to explore scattered throughout the countryside.

Monsters
The areas around Stonehenge also have spawned new Demons. The Winged Imps rain death down from the skies and swoop in to sever heads of those foolish enough to seek them out. Burning Fiends move amongst the underbrush and between the windswept trees. Moloch, the Pit Baron, also makes his fiery presence felt for the first time.

PotBS: The Battle (?) for New Orleans

Yesterday, Spain managed to flip New Orleans, so tonight (this morning) at 2 AM my time, the battle for New Orleans began. For those who don't know, this is a real quick break down of the process of port taking in "Pirates."

  1. --Attack ships belonging to the nation of the port you want to take within a 5o mile radius of the port to earn unrest. (You can increase unrest without fighting as well by turning in unrest supplies to the rebel agent in that port.)
  2. --Increase unrest to 5000 and then the area becomes a Pirate PVP zone meaning that any pirates are free to attack you, and you them in that area.
  3. --Increase unrest to 8000 and the area becomes a free for all zone. Sorry to those French we ganked, but...yeah, you really shouldn't be hanging around a PVP zone if you don't want to PVP.
  4. --Increase unrest to 10000 and the port is considered "flipped," and you win the right to challenge the port and its nation's champions to claim it for your nation.
  5. --24 hours after the unrest hits 10000, a port battle is held where if everyone shows up, it's 25 v 25 of your nation's finest in a boat slug fest. (You need to have contributed to the flipping of the port or earned contention points after it was flipped by continuing to torment the ships around the port.
But it's late and and I'm hella' tired now, so let's away to the pictures. 15 minutes before the port battle, if you have contention points, you are issued an invite to fight for your country. Accept and you're whisked away to the war room:

After a brief discussion in the war room to discuss tactics, we all zone into battle attempting to keep a line. If you can read the really really small print, you'll notice it says, "Destroy all the ships 0/2." Yes, two French people showed up to defend. Hurray. We had 23 attacking. Apparently the people on line didn't have contention points but...urm...yeah, not like they couldn't have picked up one to participate. But anyhoo...

In our case, only 2 French people showed up and they went and hid in town instead of fighting (and can you really blame them given the odds?) Normally, you'd fight the French ships to the death but since there weren't any...we had to wait 30 minutes to get into the port for a swashbuckling match versus their level 50 NPCs. Here we be on the docks:

Lots of pistols go off and lots of dead NPCs:

After killing the 4 lieutenants who each have 1000 HPs, you face the Commander who had 3000 HPs to spare:

And then...every does a stupid jig or something stupid and POW, New Orleans is ours.

Okay, time for bed. Most likely none of this made sense, but oh well.

Heath Ledger is...Dead?

To be honest, I thought it was fake news at first when I first heard the "breaking news" about it, but it seems that he really is gone. :(

Actor Heath Ledger is found dead

NEW YORK (AFP) — Australian-born actor Heath Ledger, 28, the co-star of the Oscar-winning movie "Brokeback Mountain," was found dead in a New York residence on Tuesday, police said.

"Heath Ledger was found dead at 3:26 pm this afternoon," a police spokesperson said, saying he was found in an apartment in the posh district of Soho. "We don't know the cause of the death."

The entertainment website TMZ said Heath was discovered "face down on the floor" adding that "law enforcement sources ... believe it was not a crime."

The New York Times said Ledger was discovered by the housekeeper and a masseuse who arrived in the afternoon for an appointment.

They knocked on the door, but "when no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed. They shook him, but he did not respond," the Times said.

Both the New York Times and TMZ quoted officials as saying pills were found near the body, but gave no further details.

According to the newspaper, the apartment was inhabited by actor Mary-Kate Olsen.

Ledger, who was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of a gay cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain," had separated from his former fiancee Michelle Williams in September. The pair, who met on the set of the Ang Lee-directed drama, have a two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

Lee had hailed Ledger's performance as a "miracle" of acting, reminiscent of a young Marlon Brando.

Ledger lost the Oscar for best actor in 2006 to Phillip Seymour Hoffman for his portrayal of author Truman Capote in "Capote," but "Brokeback Mountain" won three Academy Awards, including for best director.

The flaxen-haired heartthrob first came to prominence by acting as a homosexual athlete in little-known Australian soap opera "Sweat" in 1996. He played a gay cyclist in the teen soap, set at the Western Australian Institute of Sport that portrayed the lives of Olympic hopefuls.

The creator and writer of the series, John Rapsey, said it was clear even then that Ledger, then a 16-year-old sports champion and high school dropout, possessed an unusual talent.

"He himself had absolutely no problem playing the role. He handled all of that with great aplomb," Rapsey told AFP.

"What was noticeable about him was he was concentrated, very quiet, and you could see that he was really observant of other people."

Ledger, who has never attended acting school and who left his home state of Western Australia for Sydney as a teenager, credited his instincts with his success.

"The one thing that's got me to where I'm sitting is my instincts, you know, and I'm impatient. I didn't want to wait for years to work. I wanted to just get out there and do it," he said in an interview with an Australian television program in 2001.

At 19, Ledger left Sydney for Hollywood, where his standout talent was spotted by Mel Gibson when auditioning 500 actors for the role of his son in "The Patriot." The casting was Ledger's first big-time break and led to his leading role in "A Knight's Tale."

Gibson has described Ledger as possessing "the unknown factor" that "sort of lights up the screen".

Ledger continued his steady impact on Hollywood, with a small role in "Monster's Ball" (2001), followed by the lead in the lightweight "The Four Feathers" (2002), Australian drama "Ned Kelly" (2003) and "The Brothers Grimm" (2005).

At 26, the Australian was the youngest nominee for the best male actor category and the outside chance to take the statue away from fellow contenders Hoffman, David Strathairn, Joaquin Phoenix and Terrence Howard.

This month, Ledger had been working on his latest movie, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," directed by Terry Gilliam, which was due to be released next year. He also portrayed The Joker in a Batman movie called "Dark Knight" to be released later this year.

The Pirates Launch is Here!

And I made a new Free Trader to celebrate based on my obsession of late, Miss Macross herself, Lynn Minmay. I tried to base her outfit on her "Do You Remember Love," concert outfit.

Unfortunately, all the women in this game are kinda'...manly. This was like, the softest look I could get on the damn Asian face. The other one was "Dragon Lady," variant with really frightning Da Nang Hooker make up.

As for the SOE launch, it was delayed by two hours ish I hear (I logged in late), but otherwise went pretty smooth (with exception of people who bought the game through the Sony Station Shop.) Right now on Guadeloupe there's not a lot of people on at all though...as in...less than usual? At least Roberts is moderate all across the boards.

Whelp, back to loot!

COD4: Stage Fright, Go Away!

Stage fright, go away,
This is my big day.
This is my time to be a star!

That's right. You're looking at =SDF= Minmay for the time being as we work up to rank 55 again (for no reason except to do it of course.)

MP5, I mocked you in the past, but I was so wrong about you. And C4... <3 I definitely did miss my 3x Frag though. There were some points where they would have come in handy.

Some douche kept calling us hackers since there's NO WAY a rank 8 & 9 (my buddy) could possibly take 1 & 2 place. Unfortunately, when that very douche keeps running into my MP5 + Stopping Power, what's a girl to do? But I suppose he would whine getting kilt over and over again by two of the few peeps who don't camp/noob tube/bunny hop/nade spam/dolphin dive. (Spray and Pray? Guilty though.)

On the other hand, I'm glad to see that the new PB update actually caught a bunch of hackers. I had seen 1 or 2 previously over a long stretch, but today it was like POW POW, Aimbot, Wall Hackers, CVAR this and that. Unfortunately, they were only banned for "five minutes"? Hmmm.

Behold: http://www.pbbans.com

And and so we visited the Hooters Modded Map Only Server at:

8.12.23.2:28960

I guess the majority of these modded maps are like terrible sniper only maps where if you venture too close to the water you get kill triggered and everyone laffs at you, so a good time was not had by all. I do enjoy the brief "respawn immunity" we got however on them however, and the Hooters guys ([DD]) run a good server. Thanks for having =SDF=/=HP= for a wittle bit.

And as always, =RIP= Snow Crash 24/7, we do love you always to help warm up our cold fingers.

Age of Conan: Pushed Back AGAIN to May 2008!!

*hiss*

I just did my weekly visit to the Age of Conan website and...yeah...I'm pretty disappointed. Sure, I don't want to play a retarded ass game, but what am I gonna' do in the meanwhile!? "Spellborn" is looking better and better even if I do have to play on an EU server.

Anyhow, here's the goddamn fuckin' article:

- Jan 21, 2008
Funcom announces a new release date for Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

The highly anticipated MMO receives 8 more weeks of development, allowing Funcom to deliver a more polished MMO experience when the game launches on the 20th of May 2008. Despite great feedback on vital aspects like immersion, fun factor and the exciting combat system, the management of Funcom has decided to polish the game even more. Eight weeks of development work is therefore added to stress game systems and polish the game further leading up to launch.

Funcom is fully committed to its communities and the quality-level they demand and deserve, and has previously postponed the Age of Conan launch. The changes implemented as the game was moved to a 2008 release have proven to greatly improve the experience for newcomers, while introducing a more involving and accessible character progression throughout the game. Press and beta feedback in the aftermath of these changes has been very positive. As a result, the ongoing presentations of the game have continued to increase the anticipation for Age of Conan. To date, Age of Conan has received more than 20 magazine covers and 15 industry awards, and is widely considered to be one of the most anticipated MMOs in development.

Funcom has great faith in the Age of Conan game, and feels certain that further polish is in the best interest of the hundreds of thousands of gamers who follow the game. “The companies standing apart in the gaming market today are those with a relentless drive to achieve quality. Even though we regret delaying the launch, I am certain we made the right choice. I hope that our followers and fans will support our decision, and respect our commitment to quality,” said Gaute Godager, Producer and Game Director of Age of Conan.

Funcom will also continue the beta efforts for the title with continued testing on its large server parks in North America and Europe. Players can already sign up at pre-order programs in several countries and enjoy the recently released website at www.ageofconan.com, displaying part of the wealth of marketing and game material already prepared for the game. A special Collectors Edition of the retail box is available for pre-order at select retailers. Thousands of players have been invited to the beta of the game, and the number will continue to go up as Age of Conan moves towards launch. If you too want to join the Beta of Age of Conan you may sign up for the Beta on www.ageofconan.com

All a sudden, I really hate May 20th.

EA pushes ad-backed video games

The image picture in the article reminds me of Team Fortress 2, and judging from the success of that, perhaps that's what EA's going for in Heroes? I just hope Heroes isn't the "BF3" that people have been whispering about...

On the plus side, it's free (the billboards never bothered me since I very rarely paid attention to anything that didn't involve not getting killed), and more people will be able to play it but...I kinda' want to see a real sequel. As much as people criticize EA, I really did enjoy the BF series (I didn't play "Bad Company") so I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

Battlefield Heroes
Battlefield Heroes is designed to run on older PCs
Electronic Arts is to release a free online version of the popular Battlefield game to be supported by adverts and micro payments.

The PC game, Battlefield Heroes, will be available only online later this year, and will not be sold in shops.

The move marks EA's first major attempt to tap into new sources of ad-driven revenue in Western markets.

The firm has a free version of its Fifa game in South Korea, earning more than $1m a month through in-game sales.

"Online gaming has a massive audience," said EA's Gerhard Florin, in a statement.

"People want to play games in new ways, with easier access that is quick to the fun. With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play."

Digital distribution

The video games industry is taking its first steps away from a retail-focused sales environment and towards digital distribution.

Battlefield 2142
Battlefield is a highly-successful series for EA and Dice

EA hopes the model of a free game as download that is supported by adverts and micro-payments could be applied to other franchises it owns.

The new version of Battlefield is designed to have more mass market appeal than current titles in the series, which have sold about 10 million copies worldwide.

The games has a "cartoon-feel" and has been made simpler to play, with more emphasis on participation and fun than skill and strategy.

Ben Cousins, senior producer at Dice, told BBC News that no adverts would be appear in the game itself.

"They wouldn't work inside the fictional world. Instead, adverts will appear on the website and the 'front-end' of the game."

Gamers will be able to buy items which customise their appearance in the world, but will not be able to seek an advantage through buying weapons.

Mr Cousins said Battlefield Heroes was about exploring new revenue models as well as making a game more accessible.

You will be able to play this game on grandma's laptop
Ben Cousins, Dice

"I've always felt there was some really good fun core gameplay which was locked away by several barriers to entry: the game is complex, it is full of skilled people, you need quite a high-end PC on which to play and you need to go to store to purchase a copy."

"We're removing all barriers to entry and we hope there is broader audience for the title. You will be able to play this game on grandma's laptop."

Mr Cousins said EA expected 95% of people who played the game never to spend any money.

"If you look at Korea and Asia this is a model that works. Given the enormous explosion in web-based gaming products, this is going to be a real source of growth in the industry and Battlefield Heroes is the first step towards doing that in West."

So many disappointments today, so little time.

Robotech Live Action Movie Slated for 2009!

I'm hella' slow. I just learned about this and I gotta' admit, the loser in me is totally excited (though I only saw Macross and not the Robotech version). Time to chit chat around the water cooler about who's gonna' play Minmay! (No, Jessia Biel, you may not be Misa. I'm putting my foot down.)

Maguire, WB attack the big screen with 'Robotech'

By Borys Kit

Sept 7, 2007

TORONTO -- After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech."

After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the rights to bring anime classic "Robotech," which featured giant robots known as mechas, to the big screen. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise.

"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Prods. Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") has been tapped to write the screenplay.

"Robotech" was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

p.s. Minmay got robbed, even though Hikaru was douche.

AoC: Some Sexy Trailers

Just a couple to drool over while I cry over the Pat's game (the first is the Daily Life version, and the 2nd is the Mythic Lands one):

Please be good, please be good! I do like the battle rhino they had in the second vid. It's so cute!

Frontlines: OoooHHh!

So, I installed and played a few rounds today on the sexy Red Star Coalition. After COD4, the movements are on the "slower" side, more akin to BF2 than BF2142, and the graphics, despite the game running on the Unreal 3 engine, don't look that spectacular (probably not completely optimized?) But there is just something extremely sexy about taking a remote controlled robot and blowing up a bunch of camping whores.

I have fallen for the Special Forces load out with EMP however because stunning a tank, then running around and C4ing its ass is too dericious to pass up.

Dont' worry though, COD4, you won't be replaced. COD4 is definitely the winner for a closer, more intimate maps, but for big maps, Frontlines is pretty sweet. Despite how huge the maps were, I never felt that sense of sadness I felt during BF2 swimming the expanse of water (after an unfortunately boat explosion) between the tip of Wake Island, and there are plenty of vehicles to jack.

I'd say definitely give it a try if you enjoy Squad based games.

I'll try to post some screenies later of me getting blowed the fuck up.

Frontlines: Open Beta Keys Available!

Get 'em quick!

COD4: Surprise Announcements Coming Up?

I'm a sucker for the missions they have on the Charlie Oscar Delta site and noticed that they put the following mission up:

Charlie Oscar Delta!

While this community site will be live and active for the next few months (including more missions, prizes, and maybe even a surprise announcement or two), we are already putting in much thought into what the next Call of Duty gaming community will look like. We want your next community experience to be even bigger and better, so we have some questions for you about what you thought of Charlie Oscar Delta.

Please take a second and let us know what you thought of our community!
What could it be? Did Blizzard buy them out as well? Will I be able to play a Shaman and shoot lightning out of my hooves at dolphin diving, bunny hopping whores!? Or is Infinity Ward dumping the PC for the Mac entirely so we can play with our one, pearl pink mouse button?

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing some bigger maps show up (like the entire area behind the barn that I think Gaz busted open on Overgrown) and some riding lawnmowers with mounted machine guns to chase people around with. DERICIOUS!

Can't wait to find out!

Geeks Rejoice: The New Star Trek Teaser Trailer

Here it is! Now, I'm not a big Star Trek fan but I'm definitely curious to see what they're gonna' bring to the final frontier.

I think the MMO version is still in the works too.... HmmMmmm.

'Wii warm-up' good for surgeons

I can now be a surgeon! If we ever get involved in an all out war with demon zombies from the Mediterranean (or you accidentally swallow a marble), I'll be doing the honours. (In other words, you lose.)

And if you're really interested in saving lives through a game, check out Trauma Center! (Here's the official English site.)

Nintendo Wii
Wii players use a wireless wand that detects acceleration in three dimensions
Playing computer games such as the Nintendo Wii can improve a surgeon's performance in the operating theatre, a US study shows.

Only certain games are effective - those requiring delicate movements.

The fine hand control required to play these games acts as a warm up and hones scalpel skills the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Centre team claim.

Now they are designing Wii software that will accurately simulate surgical procedures, New Scientist reports.

They asked eight trainee surgeons to spend an hour playing the games on a console before performing "virtual reality" surgery on a computer system.

Wii warm-up

Game players scored nearly 50% higher on tool control and overall performance than other trainees.

Marble Mania, in which a ball is guided through a 3D obstacle course - was particularly effective in the study.

Researcher Kanav Kohel explained that the type of game play was crucial.

"You don't gain a lot from swinging an imaginary tennis racket.

"The whole point about surgery is to execute small finely controlled movements with your hands, and that is exactly what you get with the Wii."

The fine control needed to move a virtual marble around a 3D maze is similar to the skills needed to perform keyhole surgery, for example.

Colleague Mark Marshall said the games consoles were cheap enough to be used to train surgeons in poorer countries where cutting-edge virtual reality systems were not available.

The researchers will present their work at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference in California later in January.

Damn you COD4

Shipment with 50 people FFA =

But I wanted to try it.

Guild Wars: Free 14 Day Trial

In case the Master Server goes down don't be distressed! You can give Guild Wars a try through File Planet:

http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/guildwars/prophecies/

Unlike COD4 where everyone's a greasy, sweaty man (albeit the uniformed ones hot sweaty mens) you can even play a dirty Da Nang Hooker type bitch in GW. That's right:

"What can we get for 10 dollars?"

"Everyting you wan'."

"Everything?"

"EveryTING!"

Yes, FP, I've mocked you for so long but lately you have so many goodies. Just have to get me a "Frontlines" beta key now.

COD4: Zombie Mod Website

Sonic (Seven's brother?) left a comment in my previous post about the COD4 Zombie mod and a website they have dedicated to it, so I just wanted to list it for those interested:

http://cod4zombies.com/

I visited real quick during work and it looks pretty new...you might have to register to see more stuff so I'll try that in a few when I'm done here. XD

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale

...

Has anyone seen the Dungeon Siege movie yet? It's got a helluva' lot of "famousy" people in it including Jason Statham and Ron Perlman (both of whmo I actually like), and then for some reason it's also got BURT REYNOLDS & RAY LIOTTA in it...!!??? And of course, it's directed by the infamous Uwe Boll.

Well...if you haven't...someone posted this link to it on Google Vids... *cough cough*

*COUGH COUGH HACK HACK MOMBOT COUGH HACK HAX*

Don't know how long it'll last so watch it quick!

p.s. Okay, so my cat accidentally clicked on the link and I accidentally watched it. All I can say is...while it's not "Blood Rayne" (which I couldn't even watch all the way through), it's still...not very good (if you're expected "LOTR" quality, or even fuckin' bottom of the barrel "Eragon" or "D&D"--the first one, not the second one which was...alright--quality, you won't find it here.

From the other "glowing" reviews of the movie out there, everyone blames Uwe Boll, but personally, I blame whoever the fuck threw the terrible ass story together. Holy crap.

After watching that I recommend watching "Equilibrium" instead with Christian Bale & Sean Bean (yum). It's Fahrenheit 451 + Matrix (but before the "Matrix" came out.)

I have to admit however, that my cat really enjoyed "Dungeon Siege." She was totally entranced by it. She also licks her own butt however. MMmmM!

AoC: CES 2008 Siege/Pet Video & Beta News

I don't want to get too excited about this game so I've been avoiding looking at videos/reading the boards but...I did happen to see this. Lots of negative comments about the lack of refinement...but I'll still make a judgment on my own this March 25th:

Please don't suck!

Also, check out some info regarding the "open beta" phase that's coming up per Pharamond, the Community Manager for Funcom's Conan:

A Few Words on Open Beta

Looks like there was a miscommunication/misunderstanding at the show.

We are planning to have an open beta for the game as we get closer to launch, however, it will be through specific partners and require an application/registration process, much like most of the other betas for most other games.

We will be limiting the number of keys we release to a manageable number at any given time, rather than subjecting people to queues and loading screens and so on. By "a manageable number," we mean tens of thousands, not just a handful.

We’re also ramping up some of our tech test betas, and, of course, we’ll be doing key giveaways, inviting forum veterans, and inviting more people to the current, closed stage of beta as we ramp up for launch.

So, yes, there will be a wider-scale open beta, but it will require an application/registration process and won’t be as simple as “press button, get key,” which is what we wanted to say.

COD4: CTF Mod Server

Stopped by this CTF Modded server today under a fake name. (Yes yes, I'm paranoid about getting my rank erased.) The folks who modded it did a pretty good job but I felt something was a bit off about the targeting/hit/miss? Maybe it's just because I haven't played in a while. *snurf*

Anyhow! I would recommend checking it out for a change of pace!

SERVER RUNNING AWE4 CTF mod! It's great!

Call of Duty 5: Confirmed! (Plus Moar)

An article courtesy of our friends at CharlieOscarDelta:

Call of Duty 5 Confirmed

Guitar Hero 4 and more in the works too.

UK, December 3, 2007 - Activision Blizzard has confirmed that Call of Duty 5 and Guitar Hero 4 are both in development just hours after news of the company's merger hit the wire. And while the news is unlikely to come as a shock, if Activision Blizzard's recent boasts are anything to go by we could see both of the series reaching bigger and better heights.

Indeed, during a conference call held today Activision CEO Robert Kotick and Jean-Benard Levy spoke of the company's huge projected success and hinted that many of Activision's franchise could learn a lot from the success of World of Warcraft, which has 9.3 million users across the world. More specifically, Kotick expressed a distinct interest in the subscription model employed by the WoW developer, although quite how it will work with Activision's other franchises - including a new racing title from the freshly-acquired Bizarre Creations - remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, World of Warcraft won't be coming to console any time soon, with Levy categorically stating that a current-gen version of the game was most certainly not in the works.

In a press release posted along with the call, the combined company outlined some of the pipelined games that the Activision side of Activision Blizzard will be contributing to the mnerger and releasing in the near future. (Vivendi/Sierra/Blizzard of course have Starcraft II as well as several other titles in production.) Included in the list are:

  • Guitar Hero IV
  • Call of Duty 5
  • James Bond (2008)
  • Tony Hawk (new - 10th franchise entry)
  • New Dreamworks Titles (various franchises)
  • New Marvel Titles (various franchises)
  • Bizarre Creations' New Entry in Racing (following September 2007 acquisition)

No further detailers were announced for any of these titles, and no platform plans were listed for the games listed. IGN will have more on all of these games hopefully early in 2008.
