CrimeCraft: Open Beta Begins July 31st, 2009 @ 2 PDT

And by soon, I mean in a couple hours! It's free to sign up with Fileplanet, so definitely take advantage of the OB while it lasts.

Open Beta kicks off Friday!

By: CapoDeiCapi

As you all know by now, we shut the doors on Closed Beta Monday. But that isn’t the end of your CrimeCraft experience. For many of you, it’s just beginning!

Friday, July 31, at 2 p.m. PDT, 5 p.m. EDT and 9 p.m. GMT we will invite all of our old friends from Closed Beta and a bunch of new targets … I mean, new friends … into our Open Beta test. You can sign up for Open Beta right here on our site and download the client from our buddies at FilePlanet and IGN.

Our Open Beta is a chance for a wide variety of gamers to get in and try CrimeCraft, the premier Persistent World Next-Gen Shooter (PWNS)! When the servers go live Friday at 2 p.m. PDT, you’ll get to experience a revamped tutorial system as well as a number of enhancements that are being added based on the Closed Beta experience. What kind of enhancements you ask? You’ll see improved stability, more mission content, an improved UI, improved weapon balancing and more!

If you were a part of our Closed Beta, all you need to do is patch up to the latest version to play.

If you haven’t had a chance to take part in the beta, we’re partnering with IGN and FilePlanet to give you an opportunity to download the client ahead of time so you’re ready to get in the game when the Open Beta launches Friday.

If you’re a CrimeCraft user who wasn’t in the Closed Beta, you will be able to download the client from FilePlanet beginning Wednesday, July 29, at 2 p.m. PDT, 5 p.m. EDT and 9 p.m. GMT.Come back to CrimeCraft.com tomorrow at 2 p.m. PDT for your link to the download page.

If you’re new to CrimeCraft, click here to register for our site and after registration you’ll be able to download the client at FilePlanet beginning Wednesday, July 29, at 2 p.m. PDT, 5 p.m. EDT and 9 p.m. GMT.

Once the client is downloaded and installed, just wait for the servers to go live at 2 p.m. PDT Friday and get in the game!

And if you end up liking it, you can pre-order at the official Crimecraft website. As for what I thought...guess we gotta' wait for the NDA liftage.

DDO: Eberron Unlimited Launch Delayed *giggle*

Having followed Turbine over the last few years, I'm not surprised one bit. Ah well, guess I'll just have to play Aion! OH NOES!

Saucey Sauce:

Turbine Announces New Launch Date for Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Eberron Unlimited™
Free Digital Upgrade To Go Live on 9/9/09

Turbine, Inc. announced today Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Eberron Unlimited™ (DDO Unlimited), a free digital upgrade for Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Stormreach™ will now launch on September 9, 2009 in North America.

“We’ve had a tremendous response to DDO Unlimited from the players and press who are participating in our beta program,” said Fernando Paiz, Executive Producer of DDO Unlimited. “We’ve been holding a series of live events as part of the beta program and have seen an unprecedented level of participation from players. While we are very pleased with the performance of the game and are excited about the response from the players, we are committed to delivering a high-quality experience. We feel that more time is needed to deliver on this commitment. As a result, we are delaying our launch to ensure that we can support the massive increase in players that we are expecting and deliver them a free to play experience like none other.”

DDO Unlimited will raise the level cap, introduce a new player class and add major new content, as well as make the game free to play for everyone. The new DDO Unlimited delivers heart-pounding game play featuring the industry’s best combat system, a massive world with state-of-the-art graphics and gameplay, and a rich set of features that until now could only be found only in premium subscription-based MMOs. DDO Unlimited will introduce an innovative new pricing model that allows players to download and play for free, purchasing adventure packs, items, and account services a la carte from the new DDO Store, or to subscribe to get unlimited access to all of the game’s content. Turbine will provide DDO VIPs early access to the game to beginning September 1, 2009 and will provide free, unlimited access to everyone on September 9, 2009.

DDO Unlimited is based on the world-renowned DUNGEONS & DRAGONS® franchise of Wizards of the Coast LLC, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc.® (NYSE: HAS), under license to Infogrames Entertainment S.A.® Published by Atari, Inc.®, DDO has been enthusiastically received by many gaming critics, including The New York Times, PC Gamer, Game Informer and many more. For the latest information, please visit www.ddo.com.
But the best part about this is the super duper rage that comes from the forums stemming from being disappointed by Turbine YET again:

Turbine must have a -7 to their fail check. :)

Mortal Online: Taking the Plunge?

I follow a ton of games because I'm a nerd and as its release nears, I've been reading more and more about "Mortal Online," an indie game by a wittle Swedish developer called Star Vault AB:

The game supposedly looks and plays like "Oblivion," and if the official trailer truly is composed of in-game footage, it might be one of the sexiest games I've seen in a while. (And that's before I see any full frontal e-peens that are being promised. Ohhh yeah.)

And then of course is this swanky PowerPoint presentation they prepared to lure suckahs like myself in:

http://www.mortalonline.com/files/presentation/MortalOnlinePresentation.rar

Biggest selling points for me:

  • Sandbox MMO with seamless world
  • Skill vs Level based leveling
  • Crafting system (reminiscent of pre-CU SWG)
  • Player Housing
  • Customization up the hairy nekkid butt
  • Gory and large scale battles
It just seems too good to be true, and you know when things SEEM too good to be true...they end up in the same discount bin as Vanguard and AoC. (Yes, I was way too excited about both these games at one point and paid with bitter sweet crocodile tears.)

Now the game itself boxed seems kinda pricey. $120 bucks for the LE Pre-Order and around $75 for the regular box of a game by a dinky, unproven company. But the digital download just became available for approximately $50 and I'm really considering plunking down the cash for it because...I want to believe!! Mount taming system? OohhHhh yeaaahhh!!

The game is currently in closed beta, though pre-orders are receiving access! You can learn more about the game at the official Mortal Online website, and also pre-order it there. And you can bet your ass I'll be watching this even more closely as release draws near...or will it be closed beta for me?

Hmmm.

Modern Warfare 2: Game Play Footage!

My friend sent me this and it looks soooo hot.

Twilight MMO Announced

Need moar EMO!!

General : Twilight MMO Announced

Posted Jul 28, 2009 by Michael Bitton

BrainJunk Studios will be developing an MMOG based on the Twilight novel series. The game will allow players to play either a Human, Werewolf, or Vampire and explore an "open non-linear" world set around Forks, Washington.

The game will also feature a journal that allows players to teleport to different periods of time in order to experience the events found within.

The Examiner has interviewed head of software development on the project, Brandon Gardner, on the game, who described it as:

an open non-linear world set around Forks. I like the idea of letting players explore the world, and discover new amazing things that are not even covered in the book or the movie.

One really extremely crucial feature in the game engine that was licensed for the game is unlimited world streaming, and this feature allows for the game to go in an open, non-linear direction.

The game will be closely based to both Twilight and Midnight Sun allowing the player to play, and experience the story from either Bella’s or Edward’s perspective.

I’m thinking of including New Moon into the project as well. I really think it’s important to allow players to experience being human, vampire, or phasing into a werewolf.

Go here for the game's official website.

Now, I ain't gonna' lie, I got curious when the movie came out and everyone was like, "AMGAZZ, best bookz evah," so I downloaded a copy and read it. I'm happy to report that despite all the gaming I do, I still enjoy my books written by real authors. OH SNAP. That is to say, Stephanie Meyers reminds me of the shitty writing they did in like, "Sweet Valley High" and those other terrible tween books. Oh the ones that 5th graders write about their crushes.

So excited about this game? No. Curious to grief it? HELLZ YEAH! ;)

Age of Conan: Re-Evaluation Evaluation Day 4

It's been a few days now that I went back to "Age of Conan," and I have to admit, if I didn't read my old blog, I might not have remembered that I did. MWAHAHAH. Take that fanbois!

I hopped on my old Tempest who had logged out harvesting in the Purple Lotus Swamp and after forgetting to set up my bars and resetting my feats, promptly got slaughtered by a three pack of level 80 snakes in record time: WELCOME BACK TO AGE OF CONAN!!

*tear* Yes, long gone are the days when I could slap down 50 Totems, toss up a Storm Field and watch everything between Conall Valley and Keshetta blow the fuck up. But being a shitty gimped version of myself isn't why I just ain't getting that warm, fuzzy feeling about the game.

Still, I want to give it an honest try, so I decide to start over to relearn the game and roll up a Herald of Xolti because it's been a year since I played (and judging from my performance on my ToS, I need practice.)

Character creation is still the same and so is the opening. DX10 is finally in, and the game does look gorgeous; but it was still a great looking game in DX9 when it was first released. The biggest difference is, I'm actually getting decent FPS (all the way up to 80?) when a year ago my max was 30 no matter what I did. I finish up the newbie island (and maybe it's because it was my 20th time through, I wasn't really feeling it) and zone into Tortage which in the past was the source of many woes. You see, back in the day, zoning into Tortage could take as little as 30 seconds to...ohhh, 30 years--Load Screen Roulette--since the game would pretty much just lag the fuck out. Zone in record time and I'm excited. Unfortunately, it's not about the game, but the game play.

Somehow, a year later, I just don't feel the same excitement as well I first got my grubby little hands on AoC. Maybe it's because I'm playing a HoX? So I hop onto my Bear Shaman, who was going to be my new main after they nerfed my ridiculously overpowered Totems. She wasn't affected too much, and still fun to play (I always liked the combat in AoC).

Since I left her ass at 51, my friends and I decide to head over to the EglopianFallopian Mountains. But since we're stupid, we decided to stop by the Field of the Dead first. Why is this stupid? Because back in the day, the Field of the Dead was another notorious load zone that could make and break your game...and bamn, we load right in. Awesome! We noticed that the broken spawns and pathing were now fixed, and in a group, you can tear up the place. Fatalities look tight, though I'm sad to say, it doesn't look like they added a lot more (but I could be wrong.) Good job, Funcom, you really fixed the place up.

Yay! Hey, there's new quests and a new area...but about four quests later, we kinda' got bored and side-tracked by Section 8 (giggle). It just didn't have the same pull it had for me a year ago. Actually, scratch that, a year ago, I was so starved for an MMO (ah yes, the great MMO Drought of 2008) that I almost considered Habbo Fuckin' Hotel. (I lie, but you get the point.) Yes, a year later and all that was lackluster (but glossed over by my own stupidity) is still lackluster I'm afraid.

So what's new pussy cat? Let's go over the pros and cons, shall we?

Game looks good, and the game actually plays well now. Funcom did a great job of fixing all those little game play things, including making greens and blue stats make some sense. They added a bit to crafting, making it kinda' worth it, but it's just not as in depth as I'd like it. (RIP pre-CU SWG.) There is pretty much nothing to do otherwise during downtime or cuddle time (like, when you don't feel like fighting.)

From what I could see, end-game wise, the mini-games...are as barren as ever, despite the 50 original servers being merged into 4 PVE, 3 PVP and 1 RP-PVP server, and I'm told the Sieges are still broken (though ours was the only city I saw in our instance so how could I possibly know.) I'll probably hop on a little later in the week to see if the raids are any better since that's what turned us off Conan in the beginning (nothing to do at 80) if I can force the enthusiasm.

The folks in Global can't help but gush about the game, but I wonder if they've left Tortage, because if not, ITS A TARP! What you get in Tortage definitely ain't what you get the rest of the game. Sure, 1.5 got rid of the stuttering and performance issues, it helped take away from the grind, but these are things that should have been there at launch. (WHAT!? A game that works?) It's like buying a faulty vacuum that only blows out dirt, returning it and getting a vacuum that sucks (in this case, it went from blow to suck.) Do you give the company a huge hug and throw your money at them for getting something right that should have been right in the first place? No. You give them a "good job" thumbs, but you're still weary when they try to get more money out of you. Once bitten, twice shy, and all that jazz.

I wonder if I can't love AoC anymore because it's just too little too late? Has that stumble at the blocks cost it a place in MMO history? Because from what I see now, even with the discount subscription price available to returning Vets, I don't see myself ever re-subbing to AoC, especially with newer, shinier games coming out.

Though, I hear that Funcom would consider going F2P, and they have with Anarchy Online in the past, where you just pay for the expansions, but then again, that was a few years after AO had been live, not a year later. Guess we'll see when they release the expansion in a few months.

Or shall we?

AoC: 14 Day Re-Evaluation Extended! (And I'm a suckah for it.)

Yes yes, the first time this piece of Mail Call surfaced in my inbox proclaiming that my "Level 80 Tempest of Set" was "waiting for me!" I just ignored it. After all, I had family over and I had stuff to do. (Plus, I couldn't remember where my disks were and fuck if I'm gonna' torrent download that shit again.)

Fast forward to today and with a little spring cleaning looking for my Crysis disks, what is sitting underneath but my sexy Collector's Edition. So I check the website and awesome, they extended the deadline to sign up and with two clicks of a mouse, I'm back in!

And reinstalling.

Still on the first disc and not looking forward to downloading the patch, but kinda' excited to see how the game's changed since we first played. (Through Beta and a few months after before as most hard core gamers do--they run out of content that wasn't bugged/broken/non-existent after launch.)

I'm gonna' redo my Bear Shaman this time since I don't remember a thing about my ToS except that we used to be able to plop down fifty billions totems and now have one with a cool down (don't even know if that's still accurate), and check out the new content.

Ladeeedaaaa. Install faster!

Mail Call: Darkfall Expansion and NA Launch

Dis be what I go in me mail today:

http://www.darkfallonline.com/expansion/

Player housing! Sekasi?

Darkfall! Not so sekasi?

I'm hearing a lot of negativity about this game so I just ain't that interested at the moment though at one time, it was on my want to play. It certainly does look like they put a lot of work into their expansion...the graphics do look pretty tight, though I hear the UI is still pretty shitty.

Has anyone out there tried the EU version? And if so, is it worth giving it a go?

Blizzard Appoints Sam Raimi To Direct World of Warcraft Movie

Sass: Posted on 22 July 2009

World of Warcraft is probably the most popular MMORPG on the Internet, and Sam Raimi is one of the best movie director in the world. Raimi is best known for directing the SpiderMan series, and at first you’d think that he doesn’t have anything in common with WoW. Well, you are wrong as Blizzard and Legendary Pictures agreed to develop the Warcraft movie which will be directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Charles Roven, the producer of The Dark Knight.

Although nobody thought that a Warcraft movie could happen, Blizzard and Legendary Pictures moved quickly and signed an agreement to develop the movie. Next, they needed a director and thought that Sam Raimi would be the perfect man for the job thanks to his imagination for the SpiderMan movies (I’m not a Spiderman fan, I somewhat liked only the first movie).

There are about 11 million World of Warcraft subscribers who are currently waiting for the WoW Patch 3.2 Call of the Crusade which will be released years sooner than the movie. According to Blizzard, the movie will be called “Warcraft” and it should be ready in a few years. At the moment there aren’t too many details about the movie, but we should hear more soon so stay tuned.
WoW Patch 3.2 Call of the Crusade

Ohhhh, Ziiiisnaps! Will it be more of a train wreck than the Dragon Ball Movie? Or will it become a classic like the Super Mario Bros movie? Alls I know is, I gotta watch it!

I hope they have dirty tree rape in it! (L2Sam Raimi if that offends you.)

And I just added the official Blizz Press Release.

Mountain Dew Game Fuel: The WoW Edition

Okies, let me preface by saying, "I don't like Mountain Dew." That being said, my mom of all peeps was hanging around one day and caught this commercial:

So as most old Asian women do, she started to bug me about whether I was an "angel or a demon," which I'm gonna' assume she meant, "Alliance or Horde." I wasn't gonna' try them because I tend not to drink things that are brighter than anime hair, but since my MOM of all folks was really into the ad, we picked some up to do the obligatory taste test.

Lemme tell you, I am Horde through and through, so I was like, fuck you orange/red Mountain Dew, I spit on you. But holy shit, that stuff tastes like medicine. It was bad enough to make me hate WoW (oh wait, not like it was that far of a leap since I opted for FFXI vs WoW back in the day). My friend told me that the Horde stuff was better but guess who ended up in the hospital a few days later with a stomach irritation? That's right, NO HORDE DEW FOR YOU!

To wash the taste out of my mouth, I did try the Alliance Dew and sadly, though vile, it wasn't as vile as the Horde Dew. A little piece of me died as I eyed the NElf on the bottle, and then I pulled up my NCSoft screen and saw I had the AION Collector's Edition ordered and suddenly I didn't feel as sorry.

p.s. My mom said, after drinking the Horde Dew, "My Listerine tastes better than this." Listerine which can burn holes into your throat. I rest my case.

Anyhow, you Dew Heads ought to try some Diet Pepsi (fountain soda version). So dericious.

Aion: Patch v.1.5 ~ Shadows of the Balaur

So, to get pumped up a bit about Aion launching (thank you Aion Countdown Clock), here is what extra goodies we can expect to see with the US Launch:

http://www.aionsource.com/forum/general-discussion/20946-patch-notes-v1-5-update-shadow-balaur.html

Lots of content added, but more importantly, a FRO is now available:

Now I can be fat Cloud, stolen ass Chun Li and BOBOBOBOBBOBOBOBOBO all at once. It's gonna' be so sekasi.

Even if Aion fails, at least it'll fail looking fuckin' tight.

MechWarrior 4: Downloads are Incoming!!

According to MekTek:

Server Upgrades and help!

Folks over the course of the next 12 hours you may experience some downtime on mektek.net. We are upgrading our server infrastructure at MekTek in preparation of releasing Mechwarrior4 for FREE. We are building a server cluster at MekTek which basically means multiple simultaneous servers running together serving MekTek's forums, web portal, gallery, downloads, and MekMatch (crucial for online play). Our infrastructure will continue to grow as our community does but not without the support of fans in our community. I'd like to remind both our new and old visitors that MekTek is supported through a donation program which enables us to keep our server infrastructure online. We typically run a donation drive once per year to keep MekTek online. On MekTek's 10th anniversary we are marking this milestone with the release of Mechwarrior4 for FREE, the reboot of the Mechwarrior series by Smith and Tinker, and the return of the Unseens on BattleTech.com. Since there is much more information to follow regarding all of these awesome new developments in both the Mechwarrior and BattleTech world - we are in need of your support more than ever. Our studio is not in the position to foot the bill for the entire community and we rely on the support of our donation drive to keep MekTek alive! This is just a reminder folks that without your support MekTek would not exist. Thanks!

MekTek's total server costs/month are now $513.98 USD/month or $6167.76 USD/year. Our donation drive is the only way we can continue paying for this kind of bandwidth bill! Total donations will cover this increased cost for approximately 2 months. Remember we did not hold a donation drive since last year.
I'll be keeping an eye out!

DDO Unlimited: To DDO or Not to DDO

With my trusty +2 dice bag equipped, I forked down cold hard cash for the box back when it came out 3 1/2 years ago. It was fun (some of the funnest melee combat at the time), but just didn't have enough to sustain a group of hard core gamers like me self for too long. After we were stuck at 10 forever, we pretty much spent our time buying +5s from the pawn shops seeing if we could get better armour models (or in my case, swanky new Greater Resistance Robes for my Rogue and uglier leather for my Bard), pretending we were level 3 and running with PUGs through WWs and finding new places to kill ourselves).

(One of our Dragon Teams. =HP= was the first to down Velah on our server. And that hotness in front is moi.)

Anyhoo, so gave it a few months but got distracted by more awesome games, like Silkroad Online and its loot fetching monkey. We did go back once a few months later before the Titan showed up with its buggy, invulnerable ass, but the level cap was still 10 and there was still not enough content to fetch the $14.99 tag, and 2 months later, we were done. This time for good...or so we thought. Fast forward a few years...

News comes out that DDO Eberron Unlimited would be F2P (I think it launches 8/4 for VIP subscribers, and 8/6 for the free to play folks), and so we landed ourselves a spot in the beta to relive the "good times." They have added...a little content, a new beginning tutorial which is much better than the original, "Whoa, I'm in a dungeon and...what the fuck do I do now?" They added a dragon for one, making it truly Dungeons and Dragons (unlike when it was first released, it was only Dungeons and Dragon), so we're thinking, woot, this ain't bad. Enter the Harbour and everything looks the same--some stuffs been moved around, AHs added and a bank, but so far so good. And you can buy these nifty Jewels which give you a chance for BEDDAH LOOTZ. Awesome! Time for Waterworks, biznitches!! Same run as always, sexy times, get held by the yarkin' shamans and die on Elite, but still good times, good times with the new Slayer/Rare Encounters counter.

And then we hit the Marketplace. Where you're free to do the shitty ass missions, but god forbid you want to run Shan-to-Kor again, plunk down 10 bucks (well, 6). Or the Catacoooombs, another 10 bucks. Oh hey, at least we can run Sorrowdusk...NO! Another 10 bucks. *cry* No Cult of the Six for us. Guess the DM was right about us fools not having the book. :( Well, for 10 bucks we could, but really, in a beta? NO. Fuck, you can't even play a shitty ass Warforge unless you pay. (And oddly enough, people did, but then again, when we came back, there were things like STR Clerics/Bards and urr, Sword and Board Rogues--who btw, are always surprised when they failed their reflex saves or couldn't swim in lava like yours truly.) Fuck you Delera's Tomb for another 10 bucks and they don't even have Gary Gygax DMing it anymore (well, they removed that quite a while ago anyhow, but still....)

Some of my friends were actually still interested in re-activating, but then I bust out my trusty TI-82 and adding up all the points you need, it works out to be like $80 bucks + so you can run fuckin' Threnal, Vault and the other instances, which is great I guess if you are brand new to the game, but after paying for it for sooo long and purchasing the original box, it's kinda' like...FUCK NO! I check the boards and the dev thinking is, those who subscribed (and some a helluva' longer time than us for a total of $350) were simply "leasing" the game. With the Unlimited model, you're paying to "own" the game. And then a bunch of posts with a ton of DDO Vet Nerd Rage.

Golly, I get to keep 4 of my old characters as a Vet, but none of the old content which I paid for way back when everyone was making fun of me for sticking with Turbine. Hmm. Beta ain't over yet, so stuff might change, but bottom line, do I want to pay for something I already paid for?

With Aion, BF1943 and Modern Warfare 2 coming up (and my WoW subscription which I currently use to play Bejeweled/Peggle in game), for me, the answer is no. Maybe I'll log in and take advantage of the free to play (when my other games are down), but to double pay isn't looking so cool. But if you're new to DDO, and have always wanted to check it out, this is a great opportunity. There's still lots of fun to be had, Module 9 incoming raising the level cap to 20 (finally?), the games looks and plays better than ever (though that pesky memory leak still seems to pop up every so often) and they've done as good a job as they can with 3.5 rules. Just remember to not get tricked by the Harbour, and wait to see how much content is locked post Marketplace before you invest.

(Me and Velah, the way it's always been. And without the fuckin' bug to kill her ass.)

MWLL: Walking With Giants Trailer!

This is from the team's latest update which you can find here!

There are still lots of haters about the 'stiff movements' of the Mechs, and yeah, you do notice it, but it still looks pretty fuckin' good for a free fuckin' mod that people are workin' on on their free fuckin' time. Keep it up guys, keep it up!! I can't wait. XD The rest of you, go make your own mod and let us all critique it.

And to all the whiners, a dev response:
This is true. Owens is the mech that tends to get stuff done to him "first", so his animations are much more polished than animations such as the cougar.

On that note, DO NOT expect the animations to be like MW4. MW4's walking animations were totally cartoonish and silly, and totally unrealistic. Notice how dull and boring it was in first person view. It was perfectly smooth, with only slight bobs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CW8Al1fH6g

There's no real shift, because the cockpit is faked and only has a shake applied to it.

Now on the other hand, check out the almost cartoonish 3rd person animations:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95ByTi4wrWw

Notice how much it shakes, bounces and moves. It's 100% not in sync with the first person. This wasn't a problem in the older games because the only time you saw third person constantly is if chose to play entirely in third person, and because the entire animation system was faked.

The problem with our mod is:

1. Everything is real. The cockpits are real, the players inside them are real, the view from the outside is real. This means however much the outside moves, the inside (and the player) will move. If it make it exactly like MW4, then it will be impossible to use the mechs. There are ways though to add a "fakeness" to the inside cockpit/players/cameras, and make it so the torso doesn't bounce as much as the legs would (realistically speaking this would happen anyways due to shock absorption systems being inplace which previous MW games ignored because they didn't need to bother with such systems). Plus other methods to make it so the mechs feel more fluid and yet are realistic.

2. MWLL is entirely a first person game. Sure you will be able to see other mechs but you won't have the ability to see your mech from the outside for long periods of time.
2009 is starting to look better and better!

Blizzard Being Suspected of Illegal Joint Venture, WOW Facing Suspension Forever in China

Oh please, oh please, let this be true, Ernie!

Sauce: http://news.mmosite.com/content/2009-07-14/20090714054025804.shtml

According to a source, the General Administration of Press and Publication of PRC has assigned Shanghai News and Publication Bureau to make a thorough investigation into the issue relating to the joint venture established by Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase. If it is proved that this joint venture is established to operate games, NetEase and Blizzard will be punished for violating the relevant regulations of China.

The US-based Blizzard Entertainment (a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard Inc, NASDAQ:ATVI, hereinafter referred to as "Blizzard"), renowned for the successful launch of World of Warcraft in China, is now trying to play "edge ball" against China's regulatory policy. As for the operation of World of Warcraft and other games in China, Blizzard is no longer content with the role of game provider any more, instead, it's trying to achieve "absolute control" through various methods.

Several Chinese online game operators analyzed, "The licensing mode grants foreign game developers little control over channels and clients, and they consequently receive drastically less revenue from the game." In such situation, how to effectively evade policy supervision so as to actually control the operation of their online game products in China has become one of the important strategic concerns of some foreign online game developers.

The Chinese law stipulates that, foreign enterprises are not allowed to operate online games in the Chinese market in the form of wholly owned company or joint venture. On April 16, 2009, Blizzard and NetEase jointly announced that the operating right of World of Warcraft in China Mainland would be handed over to NetEase after the contract with The9 expired. Since then, there have been many rumors about how NetEase had obtained the operating right of the "No. 1 online game in the world" in China. There are two issues most concerned by the people. One is NetEase paid a sky-high revenue share to Blizzard, which will quadruple the gains of Blizzard compared to the gains obtained from the cooperation with The9. And the other is Blizzard and NetEase established a joint venture to operate World of Warcraft and other games in the name of providing technical support. And particularly, recently some medias analyzed the relevant information disclosed in the financial statements (20-F) of 2008 submitted by NetEase, which attracted the attention of the game industry and the relevant competent authorities. It's learned that the government authority in charge of investigating this case has obtained a great deal of relevant information.

Because recently, many game medias and players are paying close attention to World of Warcraf's operating right transition, and because it relates to the key question whether joint venture companies can operate games in China, the General Administration of Press and Publication of PRC has specially assigned Shanghai News and Publication Bureau to investigate deep into this case. Industry analysts pointed out that, because the case involves some major regulations and policies, it's highly likely that the approval of World of Warcraft operating right transition will have been suspended before the investigation results come out.

Mechwarrior 4: Re-Released...and F2P!

MechWarrior 4 To Be Re-Released
Free release of game and expansions to be distributed soon.

by Jeff Haynes

July 9, 2009 - The MechWarrior floodgates seem to have completely flung open after years of silence. After our exclusive reveal of the latest chapter of the MechWarrior universe, Smith & Tinker added its own special way of commemorating BattleTech's 25th anniversary. In a small news post on its website, Smith & Tinker stated that it had "authorized MekTek.net and MekTek Studios to distribute MechWarrior 4 (along with its expansion packs) completely free." The announcement did not state a particular date that the game and its packs would be released, however.

MekTek had two posts of its own on its site, claiming, "MekTek views this partnership as a hallmark moment for the global MechWarrior 4 community. We welcome the opportunity for the MekTek team to officially take a leadership role in the cultivation and development of the on-line MechWarrior 4 communities in support and anticipation of the recently announced MechWarrior game by Smith & Tinker and Piranha games."

Mechwarrior 4 was released in 2000, and its last expansion pack was released in 2002. The announcement is gigantic news for players that are seeking to re-discover the game which they might not have played in years, or for fans that haven't ever played a MechWarrior game before. MekTek is well known in the MechWarrior fan community for having released its own expansion packs. Three packs in all have been released, and the community is currently working on its fourth. The announcement did not explicitly state whether the expansions would solely be MekTek's, or would also include Mercenaries, Black Knight, Clan Mech Pak or Inner Sphere Mech Pak, all of which were developed by Cyberlore Studios. We've contacted Smith & Tinker, but received no comment as of the publishing of this news. As soon as any additional details are released, we'll make them available.

This is fuckin' sick because I can't find my CDs. Ahh, so much good news in so little time. Does this mean Horde is going to finally win an AV? ZOMGZ!

MechWarrior 5: OOohHHHhh YEAAHhhHHHHHH!!

I was pretty blindsided by this so I'm fuckin' stoked (yes, I'm old).

The game is being done by Pirahna Games. Here is the IGN first reveal:

MechWarrior Revealed

Smith and Tinker and Piranha Games are working on a full reboot of the acclaimed franchise.

July 8, 2009 - MechWarrior fans have been hoping, praying and anticipating a new game in the famed franchise ever since the last expansion pack for MechWarrior 4 was released in 2002. Now, seven years later, their prayers have been answered. IGN has the very first details about MechWarrior reboot that is currently in production at Smith and Tinker and Piranha games. Yes, that's right, reboot. Instead of this game becoming MechWarrior 5, the developers have decided to completely re-launch the entire franchise, calling this new title MechWarrior.

We spoke to the two main players involved with MechWarrior. First there's Jordan Weisman, co-founder of Smith and Tinker and co-founder of FASA, the company that created the BattleTech universe that MechWarrior is based upon. Second is Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games. (For an in-depth discussion of the reboot and how it fits in the franchise, check out our exclusive interview.)

You may remember the MechWarrior games published by Activision, MicroProse, and Microsoft. The latter actually acquired FASA Interactive in the 1990s only to shutter the studio in 2007. However, the software giant retained the rights to the MechWarrior franchise. After leaving Microsoft, Weisman engaged in various pursuits before founding Smith and Tinker in 2007. That same year, Smith and Tinker acquired the rights to many FASA properties from Microsoft, including MechWarrior.

This new MechWarrior is set on the planet Deshler in the year 3015, and places players in the role of Adrian Khol, a wayward nobleman who prefers partying and shirking responsibility over his training and studies. However, when House Kurita launches a massive invasion to conquer Deshler, resulting in the death of his entire family, Khol discovers a purpose to fight for.

There are ambitious plans for this new MechWarrior. The original MechWarrior games were limited by technology; now with modern computing power, the developers are hoping to really capture the sense that you're piloting a giant, walking war machine in the middle of an incredibly dynamic battlefield. While the two companies are still talking to potential publishers that could determine the final production budget, Weisman and Bullock explained that they plan to have a full single-player campaign, as well as support for a four-player co-op campaign, and a full multiplayer suite.

One of the key features is a sense of information warfare, using everything from unmanned drones surveying the battlefield from above to light scout mechs relaying information to teammates. Weisman and Bullock both explained how they want every class of mech to really matter in this game; it's not just a race to the heaviest, most powerful mechs. The designers want to reward you for picking a mech and sticking with it -- you will gain experience and become better at piloting your chosen mech, and that will translate into better accuracy and damage with weapon systems. This way, a player could specialize in a light mech throughout the entire game if they choose. It also means there are multiple playthroughs with different mechs. The developers also said the game will change based on your chosen mech class.

While the developers didn't go into how many mechs will make the game, based on the video trailer and the discussions, we know of at least four. There's the Jenner (light class), both the Warhammer and the Rifleman(heavy class), and an Atlas Prime, a feared assault-class mech.

The game is being developed for the PC and the Xbox 360, though there isn't any idea of a release date yet, since the game is still in the middle of development and the companies are still talking to publishers. For more information, read the interview with Weisman and Bullock. We also dissect the trailer in a Rewind Theater. Check out the gallery for the very first screens of the game anywhere. Finally, keep checking back with us as we keep a very close eye on this exciting new project.

Ahhhh, someone pinch me!! 4 player co-op AND multiplayer. FUCK YEAH!
