MechWarrior 4: F2P Coming...Soon (TM)
I keep checking back at MekTek, but it seems that they're still working on upgrading their servers in anticipation of the traffic they expect to receive when they finally do put up MW4 for free. Here's the latest (kinda' old still) news about the process:
Mechwarrior4 FREE Release UpdateSo, let us continue to be patient, and if you want, go donate!
Posted by Vam, Saturday, 15 August 2009 06:57 Comments(0), Read all Well folks its certainly time for an update regarding the the FREE release of Mechwarrior4 recently announced. I figured it would be worth mentioning considering this is the weekend of GENCON 2009 where all of the major players in the Mechwarrior and BattleTech world are expected to converge on Indianapolis this weekend. We have been receiving a wealth of requests for information regarding this release from gamers both young and old. As a game fan community development site such as MekTek, receiving such honor to release a million dollar product developed by Microsoft may be one thing but delivering on this release successfully is another. Currently, MekTek is working around the clock on pretty much everything in preparation for this free release. There will be a second media blitz when the release is ready as both MekTek and the release partners want to ensure the word travels far and wide regarding the official release. Also expect to see more info regarding partner developments around this time on BattleTech.com.
The reason we did not re-package the ISOs of Mechwarrior4 and release the game as is right after the release of the announcement is because we simply were not prepared. The news and announcement of the FREE release happened very quickly and was dropped in our lap almost as quickly as it was dropped in yours. Since the announcement, we have been diligently preparing for the release of Mechwarrior4 which has all of the digital protection mechanisms removed. Along with this development we have also been working on our MekMatch software. For those of you not familiar, MekMatch is a reverse engineered protocol developed for match making services in Mechwarrior4 by MekTek. This service was developed after Microsoft terminated the Zonematch service which officially supported Mechwarrior4 multiplayer. Our MekMatch software needed a serious overhaul to handle the amount of traffic we expect on our servers when the game is released. MekTek also plans to include MekPak3.1 with the free release of Mechwarrior4 which includes an additional 100+ new battlemechs, dozens of new weapons, maps, and other content developed by MekTek. The distribution will come as a single file self-installable which will be initially downloadable via torrent trackers and later provided in multi part volumes, ISO. Finally, MekTek is also releasing a new application which has been in development since this announcement which provides the community with the latest patches and software from MekTek. This software will greatly simplify the patching process of Mechwarrior4 and allow MekTek to push updates, such as our MekPak4, to the Mechwarrior4 community much easier than in the past.
The unfortunate aspect of all this great news is that all of these new developments could have been ironed out before the announcement but they were not. Our partners felt an initial announcement was necessary and so did we. We plan to release Mechwarrior4 for FREE when developments are completed and considered stable. We are also waiting on legal paper work from lawyers and as anyone out there that has worked in the professional industry knows, something of this magnitude takes time on all fronts. MekTek is not receiving any financial support from the partners regarding this release and obviously no one can quit their daytime job to get the job done faster either. The release has entered beta status and will be delivered to the world very shortly. MekTek is supported through donations from our community and thus far we have received 50% of our goal to cover server infrastructure costs. We hope the community will continue to support us during this very busy time to ensure we have the best possible hardware in place for this release.
Thanks for supporting us folks, while we work hard on something new and shiny, for everyone, for FREE!

MWLL: Weekly Update XVII
Read it here:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/content/view/377/1/
Obligatory Death From Above Jump Jets pic:
Meanwhile, when asked about a new release date (since the old one was...like, end of 2008/early 2009 or something--I forget), here is a dev response:
I'll be quite honest and to the point here and I'll probably be demoted for talking but I want to make an official statement here to clarify some things. And since they're doing it on THEIR time, I'll be the good guy and wait XD
We have a date in our collective minds and it's discussed at every meeting.
There's a few key issues we want to address; namely stability. We're still adding new features, code and animations every playtest. The way we have it set up is that we are connected to a central database, and everyone uploads their work for testing. We have a core group of testers right now that are acceptable for our current testing procedures.
Due to the influx and implementation of new things every single day we tend to make changes immediately to address issues. The way this is currently set up means we'd have to pack a build of some kind for a large group of testers and release it via download methods quite often. This is time consuming. Changes happen so fast and so often that certain things people play with in a weekly playtest are changed for balance purposes, sometimes even during our large playtests and crash analysis are debugged and fixed on the fly.
The reason we don't have an influx of hundreds, if not thousands of people playing MWLL right now is because we are going to release it when we're ready, as soon as possible, and within the guidelines we've set for ourselves. A few of those guidelines are stability, balance, game-flow and level design. If these do not maintain a consistent standard of quality (not perfection) they will not be released as a package. We know everyone and their grandmother is going to judge the entire game within minutes, if not hours of playing and base their opinions on their initial impressions. Those impressions have to be good, and to do that, everything has to be constant and consistent.
We're not half-assing this game and we're not going to release unfinished. buggy, glitchy, unstable software to the masses. When we feel we have a solid build packed and ready to go, you'll all be the first to know. We apologize for the inconvenience of you all having to wait while we create the next generation of Mechwarrior. Believe me, it's just as painful to see you all -not- playing, as it is to wait for us to finish making a solid game.

I CAN GAME AGAIN!
Woot!
But only at night when the baby is the sleeping.
You can take the gamer out of Hyrule, but you can't take Hyrule out of the gamer (!!??)
And of course that means it's time to snuggle huggle "World at War" for many many nights.
*purr purr*
Dare I venture into MMOs though? Perhaps when she's a wittle older though now that my guild's moved to a PVE server....

BF2142: The Star Wars First Strike Mod
Since I've been busy busy the past few weeks with house buying and a few other things, I decided to pick a more casual game to try in addition to COD4.
And then, like an idiot, I noticed the Star Wars mod for Battlefield 2142, First Strike:
http://fsmod.com
Anyhow, it sent my geek blood into hyper drive (OMG, I am a loser!) so currently, I'm redownloading everything to pway!
It looks like it might be some fun...so long as you can find folks to play with!

Crysis: Crytek Announces the Warhead Add On
So personally, the Multiplayer wasn't so sexy, but the Single Player was gorgeous and kicked some ass. And now, Part Deux be coming!
For Korea!

EA and Crytek Announce Development of Crysis Warhead
The Next Installment of One of the Highest Rated Games of 2007 Blasts its way onto PCs this Fall
Redwood City, Calif. - June 5, 2008 - Maximum freedom, maximum explosions and maximum Psycho! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and award-winning independent studio Crytek today announced Crysis Warhead ® - the parallel story to Crysis , one of the most critically-acclaimed first person shooters and PC games of 2007. Shipping exclusively for the PC this fall, Crysis Warhead is the first title to be developed at Crytek´s Budapest studio, and is built on a new, enhanced and optimized version of Crytek's CryENGINE® 2 technology.
"We were very pleased with the reception of Crysis from both gamers and media after our launch last year," said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. "That being said, one of the key principles of our studio is to always raise the bar. With Warhead , we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis ."
"The best result of a partnership that we can ask for in the EA Partners program is when a world class independent studio like Crytek chooses to continue to work with us," said David DeMartini, Vice President and Global General Manager, EA Partners. " Crysis was an amazing game and is going to be a blockbuster franchise. We could not be more excited to be working with Crytek to launch another hit with Crysis Warhead this year."
In Crysis Warhead , players will don the Nanosuit of Sergeant Sykes, also known as 'Psycho', one of the most memorable characters from Crysis . More brash and aggressive than his Delta Force squadmate Nomad, players will experience Psycho's parallel story during the events of the original game, finding that life on the other side of the island is even more intense and explosive than they ever could have imagined. Luckily, Psycho's Nanosuit is just as capable and he's equipped with an even bigger arsenal of fully customizable weapons and new vehicles, giving players access to the tools they need to dominate any situation. Aside from this new, exciting single player campaign, Crysis Warhead will also feature new multiplayer content. Stay tuned for more details this summer.
Crysis Warhead has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI. For more information about the game, please visit www.crysisthegame.com .

LANDMASS: Offensive and Quick Machine Battle
I mentioned this game a long while back because I like Mechs, blowing up stuff and urm...blowing up more stuff, so I was pretty happy seeing some brand new screenshots and reading the first impressions article featured on today's Game Watch. (It began it's official service in Japan May 9th, 2008.)
For those of you who don't know, "LANDMASS" is a F2P, Robotic-FPS, funded by an in-game item mall. The basic story (as if you really need one for an FPS), is a 3 nation struggle for a new energy source called "G3" found abundantly all over Mass Isle.
Instead of knifing each other directly, players used powered suits named MO-RATS (which are influenced by the designs of games like "Front Mission" and the anime, "Gundam") to pummel one another into submission.
Pick from customisable Assault, Sniper (pictured 1st), Defender (pictured 2nd) and Engineer MO-RATS to deliver your head shot boom:
Now you might be thinking. Shit, an item mall FPS!? All those rich little whores will have uber mechs. Well, have no fear. You cannot buy better gear from the item mall. The item mall was set up pretty much for people who didn't have time (or were too lazy) to collect their own in game funds through battle. In fact, the cost of buying a weapon as opposed to earning it, is actually higher. EXP or in game currency boosting items can be bought from the mall however. The other draw of the item mall would be to purchase paint kits to further customise your rig (desert camo, urban camo, some obnoxious bright red shit, and a cameleon--think Ghost in the Shellish--camo.)
Time for some moar screenies. Here are some in-game battle shots:
According to the reviewer, the balancing between the classes has greatly improved from beta, thus making the team or death match style, 16 v 16, battles even more intense.
IPs are not blocked from what I can tell so head over to the official site if you're interested. Also, I read that the the game has been released in Brazil as well (I don't know Portuguese) so do a search on yer own.
Meanwhile, it seems that you can deploy chaff when you have a shit ton of missiles coming at you.
Now THAT...is hella' sexy.
Last but not least, the teaser trailer:

BF2142: Q&A on the Upcoming Patch 1.50
I sorta' got frustrated with BF2142 while waiting that long ass stretch for the 1.4 patch to actually come out, but every so often I do get an urge to reinstall (same with BF2). Anyhoo, this Q&A from EA about 1.50 managed to tickle my fancy:
[Battlefield 2142] Q&A covering the upcoming Battlefield 2142 Update 1.50 . What new content will we see in Battlefield 2142 Update 1.50?
A. As well as a number of bug fixes and tweaks based on community feedback we are going to be releasing two new maps created by community members. Wake Island makes its return to Battlefield PC thanks to the guys at Sir. Community and a map which you may have heard of called Anzio will be appearing with a name change as Operation Shingle created by Jason Brice. We are also bringing a No Vehicles option to a number of 2142 maps for those players who want to fight it out on foot as well as allowing you to access 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions for those widescreen monitors. We also heard your cries for movement in pods to be re-introduced on transport ship escape pods so we have been working on giving that back to you while still limiting pod surfing use.
Q. How did you select the community maps to include in Update 1.50?
A. Both maps we decided to include in Update 1.50 were selected from a wide choice of maps that are out there in the community, it was felt they brought something new to Battlefield 2142 and although some of you will have seen them before in previous forms, they have now been updated and are new maps to Battlefield 2142. Both groups have worked closely with DICE Live and have gone through extensive testing to get the best balance and Battlefield experience from the maps. Wake Island 2142 also holds a little twist to the way Conquest game mode is usually played so watch out for that.
Q. When will Battlefield 2142 Update 1.50 be released?
A. Update 1.50 will be released for public beta in the not too distant future and is there to get your feedback as well as run checks on server stability. Visit www.battlefield.com for more announcements regarding the beta and launch and leave your feedback on the forums.
And now to check on that Crysis/MechWarrior MOD!

Battlefield Heroes: Closed Beta Clarifications
So here is their official explanation of the Beta process.
Closed Beta Clarification May 6
Hello Heroes!
As you may have noticed, you killed our website. We are not angry. We’re very pleased you want to be in the Beta.
The beta for Heroes will be divided into several stages, the first of which is all about testing out this new way of getting games to you all; by downloading and installing them from a website. We’ll also be trying out some other dull stuff to do with servers, so we are expecting the systems to be down as much as they are up.
To help us track down all the technical issues, we have asked a third party to find us some specialist Beta testers. We are doing all this because we want to be sure that when we launch Heroes, everything will work smoothly.
So hang in there! We will announce here when it’s time to sign up for the public stage of the Beta.
